A royal day in Buda

Today we spent the day in Buda. We bought our metro/tram/bus passes and used them to make our way around the city. We rode a bus to the castle and were just in time to catch the changing of the guard. Before you begin to mentally picture the horses, soldiers and general pageantry of a British style changing of the guard remember, this is little Hungary. Never the less, it was really fun to watch. We marveled at the discipline of the the gate guards as they stood motionless in their heavy uniforms in the 96 degree heat. (you read that right friends... Seems we brought the heat with us.

The castle area offered an amazing panoramic view of the Danube River and the city of Pest. Also at the castle was an area that had bows, arrows, and targets set up for anyone with $2.50 and the desire to shoot 5 arrows. I couldn't resist the opportunity to shoot some arrows in Collins honor. I paid my 500 forint and stepped up to the target area. I readied my first arrow aimed.... And shot the metal post holding up the target backdrop!! In the process, I split the arrow in 3!!! (at which point I am pretty sure the guy running the game no longer believed what I had told him earlier "yes, I have done this before")

After the castle visit we strolled down the street to amazing St. Mathias's church. We were fortunate enough to be there on a day that local Hungarians were celebrating their Magyar heritage . People were dressed to reinact historical events, there was a traditional Hungarian puppet show, and birders with a hawk and an eagle.

We took a gelato break (a triple scoop for $2.40) before we proceeded on a stroll through the rest of the castle area of Buda. Pear gelato on a hot day... Can't you just taste it?
