Quick breakfast today before we were off to buy tickets for a cruise on the Danube. We wanted to get out of the city and see more of the area so we took a boat to Syzentendre. It is a cute village/artists colony north of Budapest. It's pretty touristy so we enjoyed a bit of that after we went on a wander beyond the tourist zone. We like to just decide as we go along which direction to go, and we end up where we end up. Today it was a really peaceful old cemetery, some old abandoned churches and many interesting side streets. We really got a feel for how small town Hungarians live. One thing I can tell you for sure is that Hungarians love dogs. The bigger and hairier the better.
After our wander we made our way to the town square and found a nice restaurant to enjoy lunch Euro style.. Outside, leisurely enjoying the vibe of being surrounded by centuries old buildings. I ate the most devine cold cherry soup!!
Following lunch we sought out the Micr o Museum. The museum contains thwart work by the Ukranian artist Mikola Sjadristij. He specializes in micro art. Some of the pieces that we saw were:
Four camels walking toward a pyramid with a palm tree in the background.... All made of gold... And all inside the EYE OF A NEEDLE
The word PEACE written in 5 languages, with a gold laurel leaf on the side, all on a SPLIT HAIR
An entire chess game on the HEAD OF A PIN
You tour the museum by moving from microscope to microscope. You really have to experience it to fully appreciate the concept.
A little window shopping for all the things we can't fit in our backpacks, a stroll along the Danube, and then back on the boat for the return trip to Budapest.
We are currently sitting in a McCafe (MCDonald's answer to Starbucks) using their free internet because the Internet we were promised at our apartment only worked the first night in town. We are waiting for full nightfall so we can venture out to the Chain Bridge for some night photos of the city. Photos of all our adventures will follow soon.
