We fell asleep just after the rain started. It was the second occasion on this trip that it has opened up and poured at night and we basically slept through most of it. On both occasions it was chilly, wet and unpleasant in the morning but the day managed to redeem itself by mid day.
We had a slow morning and decided against attempting to make a dash for the Albanian border. Carrie had hoped to add it to her list of countries visited but the weather wasn't cooperating with the possible hoops we would have to jump through to make that happen.
We spent the afternoon leaving money all over Ohrid. Contributing to the local economy, you know? Where will it all fit in the backpacks? Eh, that's a problem for tomorrow. In the mean time, we were all on a quest to collect some crisp, pretty Macedonian money for souvenirs. The fact that they have paper money that begins at an equivalent value of 22 cents US made it an easy task to try to fulfill.
We stopped for one last triple scoop of gelato before heading up the hill. We sat in the shop and watched women in crazy fluorescent ultra high heeled shoes navigate the cobblestone streets, and a dad crazily running in wild patterns pushing his child in a stroller as the little boy shrieked with glee. I ruminated on how people are people no matter where in the world you go.
After shopping we returned to the stone house (very cave like and fun) and sought out Pavel to pay him for our stay. The visit included a glass of white Macedonian wine for each of us and a sometimes heated political discussion about the US's place in the world. (those who know me can picture how much I enjoyed that). Pavel did empty the change from his pocket though and let us all pick out the coins that we needed for our collection.
