Afytos, Chalkadiki, Greece. July 17, 2014

We are in Chalkadiki which is a hand shaped peninsula in northern Greece. The hand has three fingers and we are on the first finger which is named Kassandra.

We had a slow morning, wandering down to the village to pick up a few things from the beach store. We ate breakfast and then headed to the beach. We have a beautiful beach with the path leading down to it right next door. We didn't realize how lucky we were until we saw people walking from both directions, some coming quite a distance to go to "our" beach.

The view from our balcony is beautiful, with a view of several "layers" of color in the Sea visible. The first layer is an astonishing turquoise green color followed by a beautiful deep blue and then a purpley color. It's an amazing sight to wake up to. Breakfast on the balcony was a delight.

The beach was full of people but not overly crowded and we made our way down the beach away from the beach bar, music and crowd. The approach to the water was challenging the first time until you found a path through the slippery rocks (algae in the shallow water) near the shore, then the Sea Daffodils (are they sharp? Nope.) and then the hairy rocks (some weird plant life growing on them, weird but not troublesome in any way). You figure it out the first time though so each time after that is easier. The water is warm and salty so floating lazily is the thing to do.
;-)

After a lovely day at this beautiful beach, enjoying that gorgeous water, with a seaside picnic thrown in, we were ready to go back to our apartment and get ready for the trip to replace the groceries we lost.

After the trip to the crowded grocery store (this is a true beach town with thousands of temporary locals needing groceries too) we went exploring, looking for a castle like tower we had seen when we were driving in to town the night before. We found the tower and took pictures of it and the little harbor full of fishing boats and small pleasure craft.

Dinner, downtime and bed. It was a full day.
