Monastery visits

July 9, 2014

Mama sent us off with more sweets as we left to see Agios Stephanos first which the easiest access with no stairs to climb. The next monastery was Grand Meteora the largest monastery and the one with the most steps. The price to pay to see Grand Meteora (in addition to the 3 euro admission) is the climb up the 400+ stairs to the entrance. The first 200 or so take you down, which leaves 200+ to climb back up to the entrance. This monastery was the busiest attraction we have been to as far as tour buses are concerned. Delphi would be second. If you aren't familiar with Meteora, google it and be stunned by the amazing monasteries impossibly built on top of breath taking rock formations. It is a sight to behold.

We spent the afternoon relaxing on the patio of our pension. While we sat and read or caught up on email Dimitri, father of the family/owners was gardening. He brought us each a bundle of tiny, fragrant basil an detoured later with a cucumber for our Greek salad. We ate dinner in the pension that evening after spending some time in the kitchen while " Mama" made our special vegetarian stuffed peppers (traditional Greek dish). They, along with a Greek salad and tzatziki were amazing. We had an interesting conversation with Panos before we headed up to bed.
