A day in Dubrovnik

I am sick. Touching the same handrails (to keep yourself from falling down the ancient Roman stairs) as millions of others is a must. Guess it finally caught up to me. Tom was sneezing up a storm on the train to Croatia. We thought it was his allergies, now I’m not so sure. He has a super human immune system (and I, of course, do not) and tends to fight things off quickly. Glad I have a stock of Airborne.

Our first day here we spent seeing the old town of Dubrovnik. What a beautiful city. We walked the stairs down in to the city, and walked around taking pictures. After some lunch and a tiny bit of shopping, we walked the city walls. It is THE thing to do when you go to visit Dubrovnik. A defensive wall surrounds the city and you can pay to walk along the entire thing. The wall is 1.5 miles long, and Tom and I made it about 2/3 of the way before exhaustion, heat (it was mid 80’s when you weren’t on the wall) and the end of our parking meter arrived. It was a great day and we have a lot (to be honest, “a lot” is a bit of an understatement) of great photos.

We needed some supplies for the next four days, so we hit the store on the way home. The grocery store is always an adventure. I left Tom alone to buy the meat and cheese for our sandwiches while I went in search of pasta sauce. I could hear him from the next aisle over trying to get the woman behind the counter to slice him some salami. He got the right meat chosen but couldn’t get her to understand the amount he wanted. He called to me to help and as I approached he finally made a slicing motion and said “you slice until I tell you to stop”. I wandered off, cracking up, but it worked! I heard him yell “stop” and then a minute later say “oh boy. ( audible sigh) Now we need to do the same thing for the cheese.” The whole situation made my day. By the way, I found the pasta sauce… turns out Croatian for pasta sauce is runny tomato sauce, no spice.

We returned to our villa for a swim on our beach. We ran into Luke and a friend while we were down there. Luke said the water is 23 or 24 (76/78 degrees). I say !@## $%^&! Not that warm, but it’s maybe 73. Still chilly to this girl who likes her water temperature in the mid 80’s.

We eat dinner and sit on our balcony at night before we fall into bed exhausted at about 9:30. The sounds of the sea against the shore rock us to sleep.
