If it's raining in Venice, well... you're still in Venice, so it's not so bad!

We arrived on the train this morning and jumped right on the 51 vaporetto to meet our apartment manager. The streets were wet and it was obvious that it had rained recently. The boat ride occasionally included claps of thunder and flashes of lightening in addition to the press of humanity on and off of the boat.

Maurizio was waiting for us and took us through the twisted alley streets to our apartment, while I craned my neck this way and that to take in the amazing place which is Venice. This was a bit of a challenge due to the pack on my back, but every time I looked at Tom he was grinning from ear to ear.

Experiencing Venice is one of the items on Tom’s “bucket list”, and I am so happy to be here with him. This really is one of my favorite places on Earth.

Our apartment is everything we had hoped for, and more. (They just keep getting better and better) It is near Piazza San Marco, but not directly in the touristy area. We are in our own little neighborhood. The furnishings have all been purchased in Venice and the bed is a 150 year old antique. There are Murano glass chandeliers and light fixtures and mosaics through out the rooms. This place is our splurge on this trip (costing more per night than any other place cost for four nights!),but it’s our anniversary/ birthday gift to each other for this year.

After getting the run down on the place from Maurizio and then taking photos of the rooms, we went in search of a breakfast pastry. We strolled the streets for 20 minutes and had just found a bakery when the skies opened up and it began to pour. Not an “oh, we can wander around and we will just get a little wet” kind of rain, but a cats and dogs type. We took refuge with some locals under an outdoor restaurant canopy until the worst had passed. Maurizio promised that the weather will be beautiful tomorrow. Meanwhile the weather gives us the excuse to enjoy the apartment, and take the nap that we need.
