The train to Croatia

Today is a travel day. We managed to get a shuttle van from Cesky Krumlov to the main train station in Vienna, Austria. It was a 3 hour ride and I made sure to secure the seat next to the driver. The van was a 10 person model, with a two person bench seat in front. That meant that Tom and I could sit together and ask the driver all kinds of questions. He quickly realized the that we were really interested in anything he wanted to share so he pointed out attractions and told us the names of the rivers that we crossed, and pointed out the paper factory when we passed it. It made the ride more fun.

When we arrived at the train station we went directly to the information booth who directed us to the ticket office. We bought tickets to Croatia and were directed to the train station 20 minutes away by tram. Get on the tram, 2.20 euro each to ride. Must be change for the machine, no bills. Get off the tram. Go to buy coffee to get change. Realize I have a few euro in my money belt from a previous trip. Wait for net tram. Get on tram. Put proper change in machine. It won’t accept it. Ask driver for help. He speaks to me in German. I reply in German, “I didn’t understand you” He stops talking to me. Ask German woman if she speaks English. Yes. Yay! Explain the problem, she says machine is broken, you have to buy tickets from Coffee shop (where we were headed for change). You mean we have to get off? She consults driver and he says we can stay on. Yay again! Not only can we stay on the tram, but we ride for free, saving us almost $5.00. Arrive at proper station, find where our train will come… in 2 hours. Not long enough to really leave the station to see anything. We had hoped to see some of Vienna (beyond the window of the free tram ride!) We have a 2 hour ride to Zagreb, and then change trains for the overnight train to Split, Croatia.
