Today was the day we headed to The Rock of Gibraltar, which is located off of the southern coast of Spain. For the historically/geographically challenged, "Gib" is a tiny British Colony of 30,000 residents. We needeed our passports to cross over, and because they are British, they use the Pound Sterling instead of Euros. We spent 1.50 Pound for a bus pass which was good all day. We took a bus from one side of the rock to the other to get a feel for the place, I was transported back to the years that I spent living in Bermuda, which is a British protectorate. Many things felt familiar, especially the giant local bus screaming around impossibly narrow corners surrounded on both sides by rock walls, narrow roads, pedestrians and cars/motorbikes coming from every direction.
During the thrill ride of the bus we hopped off to see the far side of the rock, called Europa Point. What an amazing view! Unfortunatly is was a somewhat overcast day do our view of Morrocco (15 miles accross the Straight of Gibraltar) was obscured.
After Europa Point we hopped the bus to the cable car and rode it up to the top of the rock. We were greeted by one of the local monkeys that inhabit the area. They are tailess Barbary Macaques and they hang around the cable car area to the delight of the tourists. We climbed to the area where the two rock pillars are the only place on the planet where you can see two different continents and two different seas at the same time. Beautiful but WINDY! After taking our photos of the beautiful view we went and visited the monkeys. It's illegal to feed them and they are pretty aggressive if you have anything resembling food to them, but they were sweet and docile while we were there. The babaies of course were our special favorites, although it was pretty cool to see the families interact, and to be so close to such relatively exotic creatures!
I waived the white vegetarian flag when it was time for dinner. Tom wanted fish and chips since we were British for the day. At the restaurant my only vegetarian option besides chips was MUSHY PEAS. It's exactly what it sounds like.... really over cooked green peans. Eww.
